FRIDAY: In Running Betting Strategy By Harry “the Hat” Emanuel

After round 1 we may not know which player is going to win this tournament but we do have a good idea of where they will win this tournament.
The start to the first 9 is relatively easy by professional standards and the first hole provides players with an excellent opportunity to get of to a flying start (producing 15 birdies and only two bogeys).
To win players will need to put together a score through holes 2 to 7. In fact Daly, Calcavecchia , Garcia and Howell have all got themselves in 2nd place by picking up 3 birdies through this stretch.

The 8th and 9th holes pose a serious challenge to the best players and are very important from a trading point of view. They were responsible for 53 bogeys and 3 doubles - that is pretty much a bogey per player. Don’t expect anyone to make up ground on these holes and in fact watch the leaders falter. Daly would have been on 5 under and one off the lead if he
had made par on these two holes!
The back 9 starts the easiest hole on the course and nearly 50% of the field scored a birdie on this hole. Eagles will be possible when the pin is not in the back right corner.

Holes 11 through 14 are a difficult stretch on the course so watch out for players dropping shots. It is not detrimental to their round if players make bogey here as the best scoring opportunity follows with holes 15, 16 and 17. This where Monty cemented his position on the leaderboard and Singh and Poulter got themselves into contention with two birdies.
Below are the hole averages and ranking for Round 1 as supplied by the PGA Tour. |
